What Makes You Feel Beautiful Celebrates National Nonprofit Day
August 17th marks National Nonprofit Day, a time to recognize the impactful work of organizations that uplift and transform communities. At What Makes You Feel Beautiful, we are proud to witness the positive outcomes our programs have on the lives of young girls in Maui. Through the MAUI GEMS program, we provide education, mentorship, and support, empowering girls to realize their full potential and lead with confidence.
Below, we share stories from some of our MAUI GEMS participants on how the program has inspired them to grow, give back, and become leaders in their communities.
Lani, MAUI GEMS Program:
Joining the MAUI GEMS program has been a life-changing experience for me. One of the most impactful moments was participating in the career development workshop, where I learned how to present myself professionally and discovered new career paths that I hadn’t considered before. The sessions, workshops, classes, and events I’ve attended have given me the confidence to pursue my dreams and to see myself as a leader in my community. The support and encouragement from these experiences have motivated me to stay focused on my goals, and I’m now planning to apply to colleges that will allow me to explore my passion for environmental science. The MAUI GEMS program has opened doors for me that I never imagined were possible.
Kaia, MAUI GEMS Program:
Two years ago when I first joined the program, it was called FLY. Since then, the name has changed to MAUI GEMS, but the impact has been just as powerful. The MAUI GEMS program introduced me to the power of community service and the importance of giving back. One of my favorite experiences was organizing a beach cleanup event with a pre-K school. We worked together to make a difference in our local environment, and it made me realize how much impact we can have when we come together for a common cause. This experience sparked a passion in me for environmental activism, and I’ve since volunteered for other initiatives to protect our island. The program has taught me that even small actions can lead to big changes, and I’m committed to continuing this work in my community.
Malia, MAUI GEMS Program:
I took the program and Savannah was our facilitator, and I still remember the lesson she taught that helped me build confidence and believe in myself and abilities. Through the program, I’ve discovered my passion for leadership and helping others. The leadership workshops and mentoring I’ve received have been invaluable in shaping my future goals. I used to be shy and unsure of myself, but now I feel confident speaking up and taking charge of projects. This program has helped me grow as an individual and has also empowered me to uplift others in my community.
Shanti, MAUI GEMS Program:
I joined the MAUI GEMS program in 2024, and it has been an incredible experience that I will carry with me as I move forward in life. Just recently, I completed my internship with Island Art Party and the MAUI GEMS program, which was an opportunity that helped me grow in so many ways. The program significantly boosted my confidence, and the support I received from both of my mentors was invaluable. They guided me through challenges, encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, and showed me the importance of believing in myself. Thanks to MAUI GEMS, I’m now prepared to take on new challenges as I head off to college this September. I’m so grateful for everything this program has given me.
